This sounds like one for the food geek in you: on Thursday April 5th, 6pm-10pm, the EXPLORATORIUM’s After Dark program is holding Gastronomy night, inspired by Modernist Cuisine, the six-volume compendium on the art and science of cooking.
Expect food-themed activities and high-tech demos, like liquid nitrogen ice cream, fruit juice “caviar,” sous vide eggs with Cooking for Geeks author Jeff Potter, and a demo from Modernist Cuisine’s head chef Maxime Bilet and SeattleFoodGeek.com author Scott Heimendinger. Centrifuges, homogenizers, hydrocolloids, and emulsifiers will be discussed. Plus you get to find out if you’re a “super-taster,” learn the cultural history of the orange, and take home some asparagus experiments. There’s also music, a cash bar, and free parking.
All very intriguing stuff, but leave the kiddos at home, it’s for the 18+ crowd. After Dark: Gastronomy is included with museum admission. 3601 Lyon St. at Yacht, 415-561-0399.
