As we mentioned last week, the new bar project from Jeff Lyon and Phil West, THIRD RAIL, is now open. The pair previously worked at Range, and the name actually comes from a cocktail on the Range bar menu (you’ll find it here too). The design of the bar (from the team at Paxton Gate) is a nod to the transit hub nature of the neighborhood, with the Caltrain station nearby, the T-Line, and Dogpatch’s history as a center of train activity. It’s a long and narrow space (yep, like a railcar), with a bar that seats 15 and booths designed to mimic train compartments. There are vintage touches throughout, including in the arches over the bar and the clock, which is from a French train station.
As for the beverages, check out this piece for lots of details on the cocktail options. There are also four beers on tap, as well as a red and a white wine. You can take a look at the opening menu right here. To keep you fueled up, there is also a selection of jerky and cured meats available by the ounce. Flavors will rotate with the seasons, and there is also a vegetarian option. Hours are daily 3pm-2am. 628 20th St. at 3rd St., 415-252-7966.
