A Testy Tasting: Italy vs. France Wine Showdown

A Testy Tasting: Italy vs. France Wine Showdown
Table of Contents

On Thursday November 3rd, 6pm-9pm, Uncorked Events presents a rather (potentially) contentious tasting event: it’s the ITALY VS. FRANCE WINE SHOWDOWN at the General’s Residence in Fort Mason, and there’s less than 100 spots left if you want to help pick a winner in this international wine taste-off.

The newly renovated General’s Residence (formerly the Officers Club) in upper Fort Mason will host over 125 of the best wines from France and Italy. Playing on the Italian team will be contenders from all parts of the country, including Barolo, Barbaresco, barbera, dolcetto, arneis (Piemonte); brunello di Montalcino, Super Tuscan, Chianti, Vino Nobile (Tuscany); chardonnay, ribolla gialla, Tocai, cabernet, Refosco (Friuli-Venezia); Muller-Thurgau, pinot bianco, lagrein, Lambrusco (Trentino-Alto Adige); Amarone, Prosecco, Soave, pinot grigio (Veneto); Orvieto, Sagratino di Montefalco (Umbria); Greco di Tufo, Fiano di Avellino, aglianico (Campania); primitivo (Apulia); and nero d’Avola (Sicily).

And for the équipe française, an equally diverse array of wines will compete for your vote, including Bordeaux reds (cabernet- and merlot-based blends); Bordeaux whites (sauvignon blanc and sémillon); Champagne (chardonnay-, pinot noir-, pinot meunier-based blends); red Burgundy (pinot noir), white Burgundy (chardonnay); Beaujolais (Gamay); Rhone reds: Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, Cornas (grenache, syrah, mourvedre); Rhone Valley whites (viognier, rousanne, marsanne, grenache blanc); Loire whites: Savennières, Vouvray (chenin blanc), Sancerre, Pouilly Fumé (sauvignon blanc); Loire reds: Chinon (cabernet franc); Alsatian whites: riesling, gewürztraminer, pinot gris; whites and reds from Languedoc-Rousillon; and rosé from Provence.

To help voters pace themselves, A.G. Ferrari will provide a variety of artisanal cheeses, olives, and cured meats while DJ Sol spins French and Italian pop, rock jazz, and lounge grooves. Get your advance purchase ticket ($42) so you can vote for your favorite wine and country of the evening. Group purchase tickets (five or more) are $35. All wines will be available for purchase at the event (shipped within one-two weeks). 21 and over only.
